Our Programmes :: Overview

The operations of SRT Namibia are managed under five principal programme areas, as follows:

Goals and objectives for each of these programmes are outlined below, together with critical success factors.

For the period 2008-2012, SRT will maintain a clear focus on the conservation of desert-adapted black rhino but anticipates that the demands for its services will increase, particularly in light of the translocation of black rhino to additional areas within conservancies, under MET’s custodianship programme. Additional conservation challenges are also likely to emerge in the form of new land uses (such as mining), potential habitat changes as a result of global warming, and continued pressure for land settlement in the Kunene. The establishment of a new park in the region may also signal changes in the division of responsibilities for planning and management.

In light of these trends, SRT anticipates modest growth over the next 5 years, but will rely heavily on partnerships to support its programme activities so that it can continue to play to its own strengths and core competencies. As planning and management in the Kunene evolves, MET’s Parks and Wildlife Department has also indicated a commitment to expand its activities which will provide further opportunities for collaboration and sharing of workload. The scope and objectives of SRT’s relationship with MET will also be formalized through a detailed Memorandum of Understanding.
